A closer look

A video compressor for smaller sharing copies

A long recording can be difficult to share even when you only need a quick preview. This video compressor lets you reduce a video’s size in your browser, with controls for quality, resolution and output format. Start with a preset, then adjust the settings to suit the footage and where you plan to send it.

01

Start with Balanced

The Balanced preset uses a quality setting of 65 and keeps the original resolution by default. Try Light when fine detail matters, or Strong when a smaller sharing copy is the priority. These are quality settings, not a promise of a particular percentage reduction.

02

Match the resolution to the job

A small preview may not need every pixel of a high-resolution source. Lower the resolution in Advanced settings and inspect faces, movement and on-screen text. Removing audio can also help when the soundtrack is not needed.

03

Export, compare and keep the original

Export from the video compressor as MP4 or WebM according to your browser’s encoding support and the destination player. Download the result and compare its actual size. Already-efficient files may stay the same size or grow, so keep your source file until you are happy with the result.

Video compressor settings you can control

Use the video compressor to adjust picture quality, resolution and sound for the copy you want to share.

Start with a quality preset

Light, Balanced and Strong give you a starting point. Fine-tune quality after checking motion, faces and small text in your footage.

Keep the pixels you need

Keep the source resolution for detailed recordings, or choose a smaller output for previews. Lower resolution changes image dimensions as well as file size.

Keep or remove the soundtrack

Use the video compressor to preserve speech for a walkthrough, or mute footage intended as a silent background. Export a separate MP4 or WebM copy.

How to use the video compressor

Go from a large recording to a sharing copy in three steps.

Add a local video to the video compressor or import a public HTTPS link to the media file. A direct URL needs permission from the host for browser access.

Video compression for the next handoff

Use a video compressor to make a copy that fits the viewing task, with enough detail for the next person to review.

Send a client preview

For a first review, a smaller copy can be more practical than a full-resolution master. Keep enough detail to judge the edit and read titles.

Share a screen recording

Use the video compressor to reduce a long screen recording for your team. Check menus, cursor movement and small interface text before choosing stronger compression.

Pass along a phone video

Prepare a lighter version of a family clip or travel recording. Compare faces and fast movement on the device where it will be watched.

Video compression: example feedback

Illustrative feedback for this tool. These examples are not verified user reviews.

I was sure the quality would tank, but two clients in, nobody has noticed anything. Files that used to fail on send now just go through.

Our standup recordings were choking the team chat. Five minutes here before posting and nobody has complained since.
Daniel K.Remote developer
I never send clients the 4K originals anyway. Preview copies now take a couple of minutes instead of an evening with editing software I barely know.
Marta L.Wedding videographer
Game clips simply would not send in the parents’ group chat. Strong setting, and now they do — and on a phone screen I honestly cannot see what was lost.
Tom W.Youth sports coach
Spent a weekend running my whole lecture archive through this. Muting the audio on b-roll saved even more. My storage bill went down. That is the review.
Priya N.Online course creator
One old clip refused to get smaller and instead of pretending, the page told me it was already optimized. Weirdly, that is when I decided to trust it.
