Why Your iPhone Video Gets Larger After Transfer to a PC
Diagnose an iPhone video that grows after transfer: compare file details, check HEVC conversion, and choose Keep Originals or a separate compatible copy.
A video that gets larger after leaving your iPhone has not necessarily gained detail or become corrupted. The transfer may have converted an efficient HEVC recording into H.264 for compatibility. Check the two files before compressing either one.
The useful question is whether you want an original for storage and editing or a copy that plays on a particular PC. Those are different jobs, and keeping both versions can be the right answer.
First check that you are comparing the same video
Pick one clip and note its duration, dimensions, frame rate and size on the phone. In Photos, open the clip and view its information. On Windows, check file Properties → Details; if the codec is not shown, use your player’s media-information panel. Compare actual file size, not “size on disk.”
A .MOV extension does not tell you whether the video inside is HEVC or H.264. Likewise, a different filename alone does not prove that the recording changed.

Why a compatibility conversion can make the file bigger
Apple’s HEVC guide explains that HEVC is more storage-efficient than H.264 and that USB import can convert media to H.264. A larger converted file is therefore a plausible explanation, not evidence that transfer always doubles video size.
There is no fixed conversion multiplier. Scene motion, the encoder and export settings affect the result. A larger H.264 copy also cannot restore detail absent from the source; size is not a quality score.
For scale, a hypothetical one-minute file encoded at 20 megabits per second carries roughly 150 MB of video data, while 40 megabits per second gives roughly 300 MB. That is arithmetic to explain the difference, not a measured iPhone transfer result.
For a USB transfer, try Keep Originals on one clip
On current iOS versions, open Settings → Apps → Photos and find Keep Originals under the transfer options. Select it, then import the same clip again into a separate folder. Apple documents this setting as the way to avoid conversion during USB import.
Compare the new import’s codec and size, then play it on the PC. Keep the first copy until the second is verified. The setting affects the next transfer; it does not convert files already on your computer back into originals.
If the original imports but does not play, check whether the intended player supports its codec. You may need a compatible player or a separate converted copy. Shrinking an unreadable file is not the first troubleshooting step.
For iCloud downloads, choose the export you actually want
On iCloud.com/photos, select the video and open More → More Download Options. Apple distinguishes Unmodified Originals, Highest Resolution and Most Compatible. Choose Unmodified Originals to retrieve the captured/imported format; choose Most Compatible when you deliberately need an MP4/H.264 copy. Apple documents these download options.
An unmodified original may not include edits you made in Photos. If the trimmed or edited version is the one you need to deliver, verify both its content and its format rather than assuming “original” means “my latest edit.”
Do not confuse Keep Originals with Camera → Most Compatible
Keep Originals controls transfer behavior. Camera → Formats → Most Compatible changes the format of new recordings to H.264; High Efficiency uses HEVC. Switching the camera setting does not repair an existing oversized PC copy and is not a dependable way to save storage.
Choose the camera setting around the apps and devices you routinely use. If the problem is only one recipient’s PC, a separate delivery copy avoids changing the recording workflow for everything else.
Compress only when you need a smaller delivery copy
Once the original is safely stored, use the video compressor if you need a smaller file for sharing. It accepts files up to 500 MB; HEVC decoding depends on the browser and device. If the source cannot be read, use a local editor or encoder that supports it rather than repeatedly retrying the same import.
Check orientation, sound, duration and color before sending. Browser conversion is not a promise to retain HDR, all metadata or every audio track. Keep the untouched source for future editing, even if the smaller sharing copy looks right today.
